JWRttBRtEW'sNCL, Part 2: Haven't Seen 'Em
Sorry, mes petits chous, I know I was supposed to do this daily, but I've been in the middle of an unexpected move, and the internet Chez Jolie is on the fritz. Plus I've been deeply immersed in the New York Asian Film Festival (more on that soon), and then came the holiday, so things derailed.
Anyway, onward.
These are movies that have come out in my lifetime that I don't have a pressing desire to see right away. If you want to make a passionate argument to put any of them on the urgent list, leave a comment or email me (don't make me go on Facebook, people, my aunts and uncles are on there now. It's weird.) So
HAVEN'T SEEN
Glory (#97)
Think my parents have a VHS copy of it lying about. Not desperate to see more of Morgan Freeman acting magical and noble, though.
Menace II Society (#92)
No excuse here. Just a big ol' honky.
Casino Royale (#19)
I gave up on seeing the new Bond movies after Goldeneye. I know this one's supposed to be better, but I love the original, spoofy Casino Royale so much I'm a little prejudiced against any film that steals its name. The franchise has been letting me down for so long that I'm wary, but I'll definitely give it a shot at some point.
Swingers (#87)
Male Readership: No tomoato throwing, please. I'm sure it's great and I'll really like it. It's just that, after so many years of watching guys act like they're in this movie, it's hard to work up a lot of enthusiasm for it.
Saving Private Ryan (#6)
Don't lecture me. Haven't people of my generation had enough of Spielberg's Magical Maudlin Daddy Issue Oeuvre to deserve a bit of a break? It's on the Just Watch List; I'll get to it eventually.
The Bourne Supremacy (#29)
Wait, wan't that the one where they killed of Franka Potente in the first five minutes? Doesn't really make me feel like the rest of it is worth my time.
Spider-Man 2 (#36)
I don't know, ya'll: the first one was fun, but pretty smurfy. Is this one really that much better?
Gladiator (#43)
Another one on the Just Watch List; I'm just not in the mood at all right now. Plus, I tend to be a bit biased when it comes to ancient epics because I want them all to be as good as I, Claudius. (Note to screenwriters: read your Tacitus. He was a horribly unreliable gossiping fishwife, but he came up with juicy stuff.)
Rain Man (#45)
Yet another Just Watch List representative. Excepting the really obscure, hard to find stuff, it'll probably be the last one I scratch off. The combination of twin pet peeves Tom Cruise and the dreadded Magical Retard storyline are enough to make me want to scratch my own eyes out.
Children of Men (#46)
I actually really want to see this, but I'm a huge PD James fan, so I want to read the book first.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (#49)
I'm sure I'd like it (also thing it's on The List), but is it really going to be doing anything that House of Flying Daggers didn't do better?
Broadcast News (#70)
It looks cute, but I think it would depress me at the moment to to the stagnancy of my almost journalism career.
Unforgiven (#71)
Saw part of this on a bus in England once and it just seemed like the worst kind of cliched machismo stuff.
Drugstore Cowboy (#74)
Is this supposed to be good? I don't know much about it other than that Matt Dillon's in it, which I suppose it's a selling point.
The Departed (#76)
I'm hugely biased against this one cause it's an American remake of a Hong Kong movie I adore: the slick and tense Infernal Affairs. It'll be hard for me to judge it on its own merits, but I'll give it a shot at some point.
Sid & Nancy (#77)
A lot of my music geek friends have told me this kind of sucks. As much as I'm dying to see Courtney Love's debut performance, that's enough to keep me away for now.
