Basically, the short version of the story is, if you think you want to watch Abre Los Ojos, watch this instead. It's better, on at least five different levels. Let's count 'em, shall we?
Sexy Level #1:Intelligent Take on Maddona-Whore Dichotomy
We have two women, but in this case it is two actors (Carol Bouquet and Angela Molina) playing the same woman. The wonderful thing is that this is no predictable Madonna/Whore dichotomy. The two actresses are decidedly different; Bouquet has a frosty hauteur, while Molina is characterized by a humorous earthiness. But they're not polar opposites either (for one thing, they're both brunettes). As the film goes on, they change places in more unexpected and intriguing ways.
Sexy Level #2: Fernando Rey
Rey made his bread and butter playing Bunuel's Elder Statesman of Pervistan, and he really brings it home here. He's the aging body disintegrating under the force of raging lust -- by the end he's just a papery zombie. The only thing he's capable of is a desperate rage. It's tragic and more than a bit terrifying.
