Michael Haneke, 2009
Just a quick one this time.
I don't know about this one. It's fantastic, but I'm not sure what to make of it. It had a kind of stately beauty; I almost felt a little guilty for enjoying it so much. It was a lot less difficult to watch than I feared; Haneke always keeps us at a distance from the action. I think any Freudian could have a field day with the notion of humanity's drives being sacrificed for the sake of society. But are they really ultimately suppressed? This is kind of a mystery story, and it's so engrossing that it took me until about halfway through to realize that it wasn't going to be solved and that it would have been significantly less of a good film if it did. This film is acting the prickliest, deepest questions. Is there such a thing as evil? If so, what does it look like? Where does it come from? Whose fault is it?
